Pencil Sketching - an easy and fun to do art!

By Abhimanyu Singh92

Artistic things like drawing painting and sketching have always fantasized people. From just for fun to a well developed profession, these arts have been accepted by all sorts of people. For example, Sketch artists play an important role in crime investigations departments and good sketches also hold a good monetary value. In this simple tutorial, I’ve tried to teach a simple, easy and quick lesson on how to make a good sketch. Here I’ve drawn an instant sketch of a dream that I had one night, a silent sea shore lit up by moon light, inside a grunge frame.

How to start over?

Sketching is a great and fun-to-do art. Moreover, it gives you a great pleasure when you see your sketchings look beautiful and come alive. Its very easy to become a good sketch artist and to do that, you don't even need any special training. All you need is a few instruments and a little bit of patience.

Primarily, sketching needs only a piece of paper, a pencil and an eraser. You can have a few more things, for instance, a sharpener (in case you need to sharpen up the pencil), a ruler (if you are unable to draw rough straight lines) and a small piece of cloth (or a handkerchief).

Things you'll need while sketching.

Step by step tutorial

Now before you begin up with your sketching, make sure your hands are clean and dry, so that your work may not get spoil. Now, the first step is how you should hold the pencil. You don't need to put any stress on holding the pencil. Just consider the pencil as your own body part and handle it with the greatest ease that you can. The best way to hold it is to put the middle portion of the pencil in the space between the joint of your index finger and your thumb. Now if you have pre-planned what you are going to draw, then begin it with a rough draft. But, I personally recommend you not to pre-plan what you are going to draw, because if you don't get the desired result, you'll be disappointed.

Holding the pencil and scratching on the paper.
Holding the pencil and scratching on the paper.

Do what I usually do, i.e., just go on sketching and rubbing the tip of the pencil on the paper like you've gone mad! Well, I mean just free yourself and enjoy scratching the pencil on the paper. :)

But remember, don't put too much stress on the tip. Hold the pencil easily and start with lighter shades, so that if you need to put some darker shades, you can apply another layer.

Now, once you are done with the scratching part, take a cotton handkerchief and gently rub it all over the sketching. It will give a clean touch up to your sketch. Now, take an eraser and erase the part that you want to lighten up. Just have a look at the figure that I've drawn. There I've used an erser to draw moon in the sky and its reflection in the sea.

Using the eraser.

Now, while giving the final touch up to your sketch, use the handkerchief and eraser to remove the excess charcoal from the paper. But remember, the two most important things you need are - patience and gentleness. Practice whenever you get time and slowly you'll see your sketches come alive. Good luck! :)

interesting hub. I observed people sketching at railway platforms and other public places and wondered how they learn sketching. Your tutorial will be of great help to learners.

Thanks a lot premsingh ji!

well, as a sketch artist, i guess the reason behind people sketching at random places is just because they get inspiration from different scenes and situations. :)

Hi abhimanyu that was a great tutorial!! i would say that you should always use a cutter to sharpen the pencil specially for drawing!! using a cutter gives the perfect and a longer tip to the pencil. but as this hub is for everyone children included it will be safer to use the sharpner!! voted useful:)

cheers carrie

Hi Carrie!

A heart-felt thanks for appreciating my hub and voting it useful.

Yes, I agree with you. A sharpener would definitely be useful and most importantly, safe for everyone.

At Ringling' we weren't allowed to rub penil drawings in order to preserve the texture of the paper. We might pick out some highlights with a kneaded eraser. In this media one cannot see the texture. In Satellite Beach the folks your age would say' "You blew it up Singhbro!"

Abhimanyu Singh92 profile image

Abhimanyu Singh92 Hub Author 7 months ago

Thanks William Sir for taking time to look at this hub of mine and giving this wonderful comment. You are far more experienced than me, I am just a student and sketching is my hobby. Perhaps the way you were taught at Ringling' was correct, but I've drawn this sketch in my own unique way and still it looks quite good. :)

One thing I would like to know sir, I didn't get your sentence "in order to preserve the texture of the paper".

Can you please make me understand what actually is the texture of the paper? :)

P.S pardon me sir, if my comment sounds harsh, my intention is not to offend anyone. English is not my mother tongue, so I find it a bit difficult to write in it.
